Hello Friends!

Welcome to Mrs. Henderson's  First Grade Web Page

Welcome to Room 2's web page! Our classroom is located in the Apple Tree Hallway. In our classroom you will also meet my amazing intern and classroom assistant - Ms. Evans and Mrs. Errico, along with many new friends. Your child will also be introduced to many other teachers, which will assist in your child's learning process throughout the school year!

A Look at Karen Henderson

I have worked with the Londonderry School District now for 14 years and continue to love the minds and honesty of First Graders. I am currently living in Litchfield and I am married with 2 children. Kiana is now 11 and Hunter is 8 so like all families, we definitely keep busy!

Educational Philosophy

My mission is to build a sense of community and establish routines and safe boundaries for your child. I am determined to help your child feel confident about themselves and their ability to learn. I will provide your child with a learning environment that is inviting and invigorating. I believe that your child's needs are my priority and that my job is to create individual strategies for each of my students. It is important to allow your child to experiment and learn things for themselves, through their own exploration and my guidance. Children should be encouraged to excel beyond their expectations and believe in themselves, while having fun in the learning process!

Upcoming Field Trips

Our class will enjoy a trip to the theater in November along with a day of fun to the Squam Lake Science Center . Due to limited seating we are unable to take chaperones on our field trip to the theater, but look forward to having volunteers with us when we attend our Squam Lake field trip.

Special Events and Programs

Birthdays

When your child is celebrating their birthday , we will hand out a little goodie bag at school, but food items are no longer accepted . Our class currently consists of 18 children so if you would like to bring in a treat such as pencils, bubbles, etc. you are more than welcome too. During the last week of school we will celebrate all summer birthdays and your child can pick the day for their celebration.

Star of the Week

During the school year each student will have the opportunity to be "Star of the Week."A schedule and reminder will go home when it is your child's turn to bring in special items to share with the class.

Art and Animal Bags

Your child will also have a chance to bring home the Art and Animal Bag during the school year once we have completed our Star of the Week. These bags are sent home on a nightly basis with two different children. This will give your child the opportunity to either create a picture with the art bag or spend the night with the class stuffed animal and share the special events in a journal to share with their classmates the following day.

Book-It Program

After the first month of school, your child will participate in a Book-It Program called Henderson's Shining Stars. This reading program encourages each child in the class to read 15 books a month, either independently or with assistance. At the end of each month your child's book log should be returned. If the monthly goal has been met, then your child will receive a different prize each month and will enjoy an end of year celebration.

Scholastic Book Orders

Your child will also receive a Scholastic Book Order each month, which will give you a chance to purchase new books for your child at an inexpensive price. Please don't feel obligated to make a purchase, but if one is made, please send checks only.

Report Cards and Conferences

Report cards will be given out each trimester during conference times. Your child's last report card will be sent home on the last day of school. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held in November and March. I will do my best to have your scheduling needs met and reminders will be sent home. During conference time this will give us a chance to discuss your child's progress and any questions or concerns that you may have. You may also contact me at any time to set up a conference regarding your child's progress.

Parent Volunteers

Every year I enjoy meeting and working with my student's parents. In the past, having parent volunteers has been a wonderful experience for myself and the children in my class. I encourage parents to become as involved in their child's life as they possibally can. There are many ways to become a volunteer and I will be in contact with you and give you a look at the year. Parents may become a volunteer in the classroom or on field trips, as well as becoming a Room Mother and helping out with at home projects.

I look forward to a great school year with your child!

Thanks,

Mrs. Henderson and Ms. Evans
