Spelling/Vocabulary Workshop

Each student is assigned vocabulary/or spelling homework every night.  Every Monday night-each word and definition is written in cursive. Tuesday night-every word must be included in a neatly-written fifth grade sentence. Wednesday and Thursday night-students complete a page from their book. Quiz dates (approximately every other week) will be written in your student's assignment notebook.

Reading efficiently, emphasizing comprehension and fluency is our goal. This is best accomplished by READING, READING, READING! In class, we are using Scott Foresman's Reading Street Program and assorted chapter books. The fifth grade team works on developing and practicing comprehension skills, strategies, and vocabulary. Students will be expected to work independently and in teacher directed small and large groups.

6&1 Traits TM Writing framework is a way to learn and use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing as well as create a common vision of what "good" writing looks like. The 6-Traits are: word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, idea development, organization, voice, and presentation. By year's end, students will be expected to have completed a persuasive, narrative, and informational essay.
